About Nurses Do It Better (2018)
ABOUT THE DIRECTOR
Stephan Pacheco is an independent filmmaker and writer who explores controversial and socially charged subject matter. In Nurses Do It Better, he writes and directs a film centered on systemic healthcare issues in the United States, blending satire and drama to examine institutional bias and patient vulnerability. His storytelling approach combines provocative themes with character-driven narrative.
FILM SYNOPSIS
Nurses Do It Better follows John, an average young man suffering from a mysterious illness that repeatedly lands him in emergency rooms. Instead of receiving compassionate care, he encounters prejudice and suspicion, with several doctors treating him as a drug seeker rather than a legitimate patient. As his hospital visits increase, he becomes disillusioned with the healthcare system. Amid this turmoil, John finds comfort and understanding in the attentive care of nurses who treat him with empathy. The film contrasts institutional coldness with individual compassion, while weaving in elements of dark humor and personal relationship struggles. Tagline: When help is what you need, nurses do it better.
DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT
Stephan Pacheco, a disabled Hollywood filmmaker, envisions Nurses Do It Better as a "miracle" born from a deeply personal struggle with the same medical condition depicted in the film. His creative philosophy centers on taking the "hard to look at" aspects of life and transforming them into something so beautiful it cannot be resisted. Pacheco intended the film to be a "love letter" to the nursing profession, representing the solace and care he received in a system where he was often treated with prejudice by doctors. He emphasizes that the project was a "product of limited means but immense heart," filmed with a diverse cast who often worked for free and a cinematographer hired "straight off the street" on the day of the shoot. His prose reflects a belief that the film's existence is a victory in itself a testament to the idea that art is born when people believe in it against all odds.
